All About Johns Hopkins University Talent Search
If you have a gifted child at home, you'll want to start looking into a formal talent search program, such as the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth (CTY) for gifted children in grades 2-6. These extra-curricular opportunities exist to help intellectually advanced kids fully realize their potential. They provide access to summer programs, distance learning, and contests and competitions. Once in the talent search program, there are newsletters, websites, and correspondence and online learning opportunities for a wide variety of subjects. Gifted kids get access to accelerated learning, plus a sense of camaraderie with gifted peers.
CTY identifies, assesses, and recognizes outstanding academic talent. CTY participants have access to above level testing, advanced curriculum, and camaraderie with a community of gifted peers. CTY knows that bright students thrive on praise and recognition, but far less public recognition is given for academic talent than for sports, music, or other abilities. All students in CTY receive a Certificate of Participation and the chance to be honored for both state and national achievement through CTY's Award Ceremonies. Participation is also usually acknowledged at the school level.
How Are Children Selected For CTY?
University talent searches typically recruit from a limited geographical area. CTY serves the following states: AK, AZ, CA, CT, DE, HI, ME, MD, MA, NH, NJ, NY, OR, PA, RI, VT, VA, WA, WV, or DC. Students must be attending school or homeschooling in one of these states to qualify. In addition, students may be nominated by educators or parents if they have scored at the 95th percentile or higher level on one or more areas of a nationally normed standardized test. In addition, students may qualify on the basis of achievement of advanced levels on state tests, designated as advanced proficiency, distinguished, honors, or gifted or through demonstration of superior academic performance.
