Is Breast Tenderness the First Sign of Pregnancy?
For many women, breast tenderness occurs long before a missed period or any other sign of pregnancy. Breasts may feel a little tender to the touch and even some bras or supportive tank tops can cause discomfort. Because breast tenderness is also a sign of getting your period, a lot of times this early sign of pregnancy goes unnoticed.
All kinds of exercise may be painful, and depending on your breast size, as little motion as walking up stairs may be uncomfortable without a supportive bra. Some pregnant women are unable to sleep on their stomachs. If breasts are especially tender during sex, ask your partner not to touch them, especially the nipples. Breast tenderness is and annoying, and possibly painful, but normal part of pregnancy.
Why Are Breasts Sore During Pregnancy?
Your body is going through a lot of changes during pregnancy, and your breasts are getting ready to feed your baby. Breast growth and develop often leads to swelling and soreness. The tenderness may also be caused by an increase in hormone the levels of estrogen and progesterone during pregnancy, which causes blood to rush to your breasts. As milk ducts and milk-producing cells develop in the breasts, tissue will grow and change shape. You also start to get more layers of fat underneath the breast tissue that contributes to the increase in size.

All women will react differently, but here are some common changes you can expect in your breasts throughout pregnancy:

Okay, so... I'm not having tenderness in my breasts at all, like a lot of these articles that I read online. Ninety percent of the time I'd probably forget that my boobs are there if I didn't have to look at them. But about two to three weeks ago, my boyfriend and I had unprotected sex, and early last week I felt mild fatigue (though I had plenty of sleep the night before), and then for a couple days, I was feeling cramping, but it subsided yesterday... it was very short lived, but there were a couple times throughout both days where I felt a tiny bit of mild cramping. I was expecting my period last Monday, still have no signs of it, so probably last Thursday I took a pregnancy test, but it came back negative... I really haven't been showing any other signs that I could be, but is there a possibility that I'm pregnant? Are most women the same when it comes to what symptoms they show and my body's just retarded? Curious...

My situation is odd. My "boyfriend" 16 years older than me, I'm 22, he's 38. We were coworkers on a strange schedule, and hit it off as friends immediately. I never knew he was interested in me until it was way late into the morning and we were drunk out of our minds. I proceeded with an open report on rape to help him understand how much this really affected me, but didn't provide the proof needed to actually convict him--and so CID ended their investigation, and determined that he was not guilty. I finally confronted him to let him know why I reported him, and that I missed him dearly and hoped that he'd learned from his mistake. I could see in his eyes that he had. He'd opened that door, and I lusted after him. And couldn't stay away from him. One night, I was drunk and I wanted his baby so bad, that when he got up to use the restroom, I quickly picked up his sperm and put it inside myself. The idea came from when he joked and said, "You're not going to sneak some of that in while I'm away are you?" the day prior to that. I immediately was in despair: Why did I just DO that?! Now I'm going to have to pay for Plan B...AGAIN. Not to mention, I could get into trouble for falsifying a crime, which wasn't false. I just...fell in love with who he really is.
So to the important part: My cycle is usually 28 days. On Aug 23-27 I'm guessing I could have conceived during that time. Say sperm survives up to five days, coupled with my phone app estimated my ovulation/fertile cycle to be during that time period, that could mean I got pregnant. No, I didn't use Plan B, by the way, I kind of...lost track of time. I was lazy plus I work a weird schedule that makes it easy to lose track and...well...before I knew it...it was too late.
Anyways, within the first week I experienced a tightness in my pelvic area. Then extreme pain. Also, a whole lot of aches and pains in my back and somewhat tender nipples and one day of nausea. This was before I was supposed to experience symptoms for my period. I also had creamy secretion and smoky pee.
Turns out I had two infections and I'd also contracted a cold (it has mostly had me coughing) which I have gotten rid of by now, and it took away those pelvic pains. The week before my period was supposed to start (it was supposed to start on Sept 8th) I retained my symptoms of acheness and sore tits. Now I am 8 days late. I've been five days late before through stress and such, which has definitely been recent because of the situation explained above, but 8 days? Additionally, my breasts are now much more sore, fuller, and I had an itch--a symptom I didn't know existed until checking out more information and that was AFTER I had the itch. It was a really weird, k? [lol]
I've been sorta pigging on food as of a late...but that's normal. Mmm...chocolate....[snaps out of it] Oh jeez. So weight gain could be a part of it, but then my breasts normally flatten out when I lay down, regardless of weight. It's like another layer has been added to keep them looking full even while laying flat.
Anyways, tiredness could be another factor. I have been sooo slothful AND emotionally back and forth lately. I have a terrible work schedule, which could just be getting to me...but I don't know...
I'm still achy, I feel tired all the time, my breasts hurt more than they ever have before, and my allegedly not-guilty rapist/boyfriend/don't want to have a future with but love dearly anyways *guy* has been stationed in another country while I'm stationed on the east coast.

I had my first son july in 2010. My significant other and I have been trying for 2 months and believe I'm pregnant. My period is supposed to start in four days. Guess we will find out. Lindsay, Fluffy, other young ladies in high school, please go to Planned Parenthood and get on the pill. Not judging at all, just common sense if you are not ready for being a parent. You found this site, look up theirs. They will also have condoms there - guys should wear one or else you should refuse to sleep with them. If they don't happen to have any, how thankful they will be when you provide one. You're still young and will probably have other partners so you don't want to get stds. And ladies who are asking if they are preg - I know the tests they sell at the drugstore are expensive but they do work - the day you are expecting your period. you can order preg tests cheaper online also if you are trying. the product name will not show up anywhere visible. best of luck everyone! now back to my sore boobies.

Even if he pulls out, most of the sperm come out in the first of the semen and precum carries sperm too. Even if your on the pill using protection is a good idea too because it takes a while for your body to register the pill and when you take antibiotics it cancels out the pill. Alright, so for starters, I'm a seventeen year old female who's been having unprotected sex for about three weeks now. I am certainly not ready for a child, and am very worried. For the past few days I've been having some breast soreness, which I always do about a week and a half before my period, but this just feels too early. Okay after reading all of the posts I believe that I maybe pregnant but I need help I have a wonderful 13 year old daughter I had her when I was 21 I feel very blessed to have had her when I did.......That being said I am now 33 my boyfriend is 39 he has been a diabetic since he was 7 he has been told he has a low sperm count because of this. I am about a week from my period and my breasts are super SORE and have been for about a week. Every morning for 5 days when I first get up I feel like I'm going to vomit I have heartburn SUPER bad, and now as of today I have some cramping not a lot but its there. Just because you are married does not mean you will last forever. That's a really shallow point of view. I know people that have been together for 25 years have 3 kids and are extremely happy. Get with the times, as long as you are in a commited relationship that's all that matters. These days a wedding ring doesn't seem to mean much, it's easy to get a divorce. Stop judging people and worry about your own relationships. I personally am happily married but it makes me so angry that people feel they have the right to tell other people how to live their life!!! As long as there is love that is all that matters!
I would totally have to agree with prochoice so many of you young girls are trying to get pregnant out of wedlock and its honestly the best idea to wait...for the longest time I wanted to have a baby before I got married but I'm glad I waited because now I can have a baby with someone I know I will be with the rest of my life...and I know I will be with him forever because God is the center of our relationship :)

Honey, I seriously doubt it. 4 tests and a period equal not pregnant. You're probably gaining weight because you're eating more to deal with stress. Also, remember your own statement of "i am too young to handle this" the next time you go have unprotected sex...If you're too young to handle a baby you should be taking every precaution not to have one.
we didnt have a full intercourse but suspect of precum getting inside me. it happend in july and i had my periods in august but m feeling breast sore on the right top portion of the breast. i took urine test four times and it all turned out to be negative. i am not even having any vaginal discharges. they r most of the time dry. i seem to gaining weight. can i be pregnant???

See your doctor and get a blood test.. That's what I did and I had conceived.. Try not to stress and worry yourself it's hard not to, but if you are pregnant you don't want to stress them baby too.. Also do you have any lower abdominal pain..?? Good luck xx

So my boyfriend and I have been having unprotected sex for the past year and half. I do not have a period. I haven't had one for three years. In November I had a breast reduction and seemed mostly healed. I am 27 and have a very happy 5 year old boy for another man other than my current man, who I will be married to this August :). I never let my son met this man until he decided he wanted to spend the rest of his life with us and I knew he would not hurt my little boy. We are currently trying to get pregnant and I am on CD 49 and 35Dpo. I took a pg test on April 16th, two days after AF was due, and got a negative :( I am too afraid to test again. I have had tender nipples, mainly on the left breast, like someone is pinching them and have been waking during the night to go tinkle. Strange for me. At 9Dpo I started having minor cramping which lasted until the 18th. I have been tired and a little moody. Most months my breast become tender a week before aunt flow is due and I get really depressed a day before she arrives. I have been checking my cervix, in hopes that it will help me learn more about my cycle. Right now it is fairly high and soft like relaxed lips. I am telling you all this in hopes that it will help you understand your own bodies. I have found that only a positive pg test will confirm any pregnancy, but a person is always aloud to think and hope.
As for the ladies on here who are talking about abortions, being sexually active at young ages, and being married or not, it's really none of our busy. Just try to know all the details before you choose to bring a child into this world.
It is extremely hard being a single parent with or without help. Unfortunately, marriage doesn't mean as much as it did when our grandparents were growing up and if you and your man are fighting or have intense moments were you find it hard to speak your minds, maybe you should work on that before becoming pregnant or giving birth.

I have major advise for all you ladies trying to become pregnant. First some back round information. My husband and I have been trying since July 2010 to become pregnant and finally, 10 months later we became pregnant, I think I am 5 weeks but my doctor thinks it may be twins or around 8 weeks so I am having an ultra sound next month to find out. Anyways! I finnaly found out after 8 months of trying that my uterouse was tilted slightly back. So that is somthing you should get checked for, the positioning of your uterous. At the beginning of our ninth month mother told me her uterous was the same and the only way to get pregnant is with a pillow under your bum. So, find a really big and hard pillow, it can be soft or smal or it won't tilt you enough. It will be awkward for your husband to position himself but he will figure it out. It worked!! Hope this trick work fo all whom are trying!

We have been trying for 8 months now and like many when I get my hopes up, its either a negative test or my period comes. I'm four days late as of today but I'm not too excited as I've read early pregnancy symptoms and period symptoms are so similar. To all of u mommies out there, u are truly blessed. Like some of the other ladies I have extreme nipple tenderness. My breast really don't hurt its just the nipples. In March my breast hurt so bad that the pressure of my bra put me in so much pain. I am experiencing the same things now! Since February I have been experiencing nausea but my period has come every month there after. I did have unprotected sex in January but like 28 hours after, my period came on but it only lasted 3 days (usually 5-7). I have taken a prego test in March and it was negative. I don't think that I am pregnant but I cannot explain the extreme nipple tenderness. Does anyone have any suggestions?
WoW!!! I hope to goodness after reading all I have read in here that if my daughters ever have some of the problems the young girls on here are having that they are comfortable enough to come and talk to me. I have one Bio daughter and one 13 full time step daughter. And one full time 9 year old dull time step son... my husband and I have no children togather and I have come off my iud as of two months ago. I soon bad would love to have another child but have had two eptopics. This month I am supposed to start on April 28. I have had soar breasts for a week and a half feeling some naysayers at night felling tired. But around the 13 of April I started having a pinching feeling in my uterus. That was different. I am now having some light cramping and the pinching has stopped as of a few days ago.. well I know one lady wrote no one answers on here but I am truly. Hoping. Someone will. Does it sound like pregnancy it has been 10 years since I got pregnate so having a hard time remembering all the feelings.. please tell me your thoughts. Blue bell if you took a test last week when you missed a period then it the hcg levels may have not been enough to be detected by the test, if your a week late now you should take another test!!! Good luck, let us know whether it was positive or not! X

I agree completely that it is better nowadays to have children younger and if you are in love and want a child together why not if you are in the position to do so. We desperately want our child, but having really strong pregnancy symptoms this month that I have ne'er experienced before and still yet another bfn this morning, I am starting to get worried that either their is something wrong with me(I'm 20) or something wrong with my fiancées sperm. to ProChoice i dont think that it really matters if you are married or not and who is to judge any one i under stand you can say what you want but i think that if you are married and your husband is cheating or abusin you it just makes it worse just because you are not married dont mean that you are going to be a single mom you can be a single mom even if you are married all men are the same weather they are married or just a boyfriend they are still going to do what ever they want and it is going to be harder if you are married because then you have to go and have a lot more problems through the court yeah i agree that if you are young wait tell you are married or anything else but now days it is better to be 20 and have a kid and not 30 or 35 there are to many heath risks when you are older but dont do it unless you are ready if you dont think you can do it then dont even try it my opinion
It is amazing to me how many of these girls are sayn they are trying to get pregnant by their boyfriend. True a man can do you wrong whether you're married or not. But at least you have some type of security and commitment with a wedding ring. This is why we have so many "baby daddies" and broken homes because we think having a baby will make him stay or love you more. If he is your 'fiance' and he wants a baby but doesn't want to make you his wife first, something to think about. Do you "fiancees" have a date set for the wedding? If not, then chances are you will keep that "fiancee" title for eternity or until he gets ready to leave you-whichever comes first. Can you afford to bring a baby into this world? Have you finished school? Having a baby (yes I am speaking from experience) changes EVERYTHING in your life. Everyone will be happy for you but no one will be there for you to babysit when you just want to get some sleep, or just make a quick run to the store in the cold and rain, or just soak in the tub, or go to the salon or nail spa or party all weekend with your girls. While you little girls are googling "pregnancy symptoms", try googling "inactive (absent) fathers and the effects on children". We are so selfish these days that we don't stop to think about the long term effects of raising a child in a single parent household. Every child deserves to be raised in a loving two-family home. Of course single parenting is possible, but it is not easy. And if you are not married and pregnant, chances that you will be a single parent increase drastically. I'm not judging but I am offering some advice that I wish someone had given to me. Of course my boyfriend and I were "in love" when we conceived but unfortunately life happens and we cannot control other people and the choices they make. I never thought he would leave five years later. Having to look at your child's sad face when they receive letdown after letdown is no fun. People are still growing up and not really knowing what they want, desires change, and the possibility is strong that they will no longer desire to be with you. And you are left to raise (or have your parent(s) unfairly raising) a child that you had out of poor judgment. If you are young, I encourage you, please finish school, go to college, travel, have fun because having a baby will make some of that very difficult if not impossible.
Well I would say to all you ladies trying dont give up! YOu can have many symptoms and not be pregnant. The only was of know is by taking a test. I am in the same boat with breast tenderness and just not feeling right. I will be taking a test soon. I have a feeling that I am but who knows. As far as the girl that got an abortion I do not agree with it at all however, I must say that I would much rather that a child be aborted than be in a family that does not want him or put in the system for adoption. Too many people adopt overseas instead of on our own home front. this is just my opinion!!!

Hi wondered whether anyone can help me, I'm 20 and have been with my boyfriend a couple of years, we are engaged and as he is 30 we really want a child! We have been trying for 8 months and no luck! There have been a few times when I thought I had the symptoms but I think it's just wishful thinking as I always get my period! We always time it so we have sex everyday/every two days a week before ovulation, what is wrong with me! I do smoke which I am going to quit next week with patches, and he likes a few pints every day, I know maybe a silly question but can his drinking be affecting our trying to concieve? I have been trying to get pregnant for a while now. We were successful once but it ended in miscarriage. Last month I really thought it worked, but then I started my period 4 days early. It was different from my usual periods in that the cramps were there, but not excruciating as they usually are. they also lasted for 5 days, the same as the bleeding. Now it's over and my breasts are still very tender.

I have been having unprotected sex for about a month with my boyfriend; stupidity. I am only 19 and not prepared. The kinda situation u set up for urselves and ur potential children is not usually ideal. Im 25 & speak from experience. Its not great, but it could have been much much worse!! Okay i have been on nuvaring for some time now and when it came time to put it in i was 3 days late putting it in due to insurance problems. I know they are not supposed to be effective if you dont put it back in on the same day for another 7 days. I'm right with the ladies who aren't getting breast pain! I ALWAYS get breasts pain about 10 days before my period. I'm 6 days away from af and nada! I have been preggers before and I remember that the lack of breast pain was the 1st thing I noticed so hopefully that's the case this time!! That or I haven't ovulated :(
Hi I need some advice. Me and my fiancee have been trying to have a baby and we've been trying since December 2010. It has been about 3-4 weeks ago since we first had unprotected sex. On the 1st of the month (2 weeks before my period) I had some light brown/pink stuff come out. It wasnt my period like i thought it might be. I'm not due for my period for about 1.5 weeks but last week I spotted for the day, have cramps, bloating, and back pain. My tubes are tied! My first (and only) symptom of pregnancy (other than missed period) has always been breast tenderness. Same this time...but today they're not tender at all. Could this be a sign of reduced hormones and an impending miscarriage? Or can the tenderness fluctuate? It's been a few years since my last pregnancy, and, of course, I can't wait till my OB/GYN appt next week to find out.

I've been on birth control pills for years. Unfortunately, during the first "active pill" week this month, I messed up and forgot 2 days in a row and was almost 12 hours late a 3rd day. So I have been having some symptoms and I was thinking maybe stress. Starting in November my period was a day early and lasted only for days so I did not think anything of it just thought cycle must be changing. December my period was two days late and lasted four days. So I went and took a urine test at the clinic and it was negative but the doctor said it may be to early and I really was not experiencing any symptoms other than sleepy and frequent urination. And also both periods were light which is unusual because I bleed heavy. It is now January and I started again a day early bleed heavy but again only four days. But since December I have begun to feel nausea and hunger at same time. My breast itch but are not sore or tender, my stomach itches and has also peeled overnight weird! I get constant leg cramps and the heels of my feet are so sensitive to touch or me standing on feet. Back achs, sholder aches, my bra size has went from a 42DDD or F to a 44G or H Wow! I am getting like light freckles or spots on my face and my breast and some on stomach and bloated with cramping but not unbareable. I am going to schedule another appointment but this time have a blood test done because last time I was pregnant I had a tub pregnancy and they did not detect in my urine but through a blood test after they gave me a paps. I was 2 months and if I had waited any longer I could have died because the baby was still trying to grow. But thank GOD that he kept me. Anyway this does not feel like the last time though but I do feel very pregnant.
my husbans said the same thing and when I took a pregnancy tests to confirm it, turns out I was pregnant. BY the end of my pregnancy I went from a B cup to D cup. Talking about painful and sore breast.

Not too much info at all! I am trying to discern the difference between premenstrual soreness and early pregancy soreness myself. It is too soon for a test to yield results and I have a gyno appt next week anyway, but of course, I need to know now! LOL. I always get the tenderness, but not the size increase. Within two days of ovulating (and taking advantage of it), a full two weeks before my next period, they were sore, much earlier than normal, and HUGE. What I am experiencing now is longer and stronger than normal, but with the added issue of size increase, early on and lasting. I know that everyone is different and will not have the same symptoms. Sometimes it's just nice to put it all out there with women who are in the same boat. My husband and I have been TTC for 8 months now. Of course, I have taken several test out of hope for a positive over the time. The past week to two weeks I have been experiencing extremely sore breast, nipples seem to stay hard, and I can't find motivation when I get home in evening. I have been a very active person and normally work out when I get home from work, but the past week to two weeks I have just wanted to lay on the couch and/or go to bed. I am not due to start my period for about another 4 days. I am hoping and praying that we are pregnant this time. I just have tried to not get to worked up about it. The things I am experiencing are new for me. My breast normally don't become sore until the day I start my period and nothing like how they are now. I mean even when my arm rubs across them while moving around for everyday life it hurts. I am going to try to hold off until I am at least a week late to test. Good luck to everyone that is TTC.
