Making the Decision to Buy a Smart Phone
I am not an early adopter of technology. Gadgets just don’t thrill me enough to be the first one to have the latest and greatest. However, I had been jealous of my husband’s Blackberry for a long time. I envied the way he was able to clear things off his mind with a few clicks of the keys while walking the aisles of WalMart. I on the other hand had to rush home to my computer any time I was expecting important news.
A long time passed from desire to purchase because frankly, I didn’t have enough business purpose to justify the initial outlay of cash and the increase in monthly payments I’d incur. The big determining factor for me was travel. I had several weekend trips coming and I wanted to travel light. I dreaded hauling my laptop everywhere, but I also didn’t want to be completely out of touch for several days in a row.
Now I had to decide between the Blackberry and the iPhone.
Making the Decision to Buy the iPhone
I went into the store pretty much convinced I’d go for the Blackberry. It seems ridiculous now, but I was fixated on the keyboard. (Now Blackberry has a model with a touch screen, but this was before that.) I wanted to be able to click away at those keys with my thumbs and I couldn’t imaginge myself getting fast enough on the touch screen.
But then I played with the iPhone and it sold itself pretty fast. It’s just a cooler machine. And it does so much more. (This is the part where I admit that I have yet to download ANY apps for my iPhone. I know. And I STILL say it does so much more!)
How I Use My iPhone
As I mentioned above, one of the most important functions to me in any smart phone was the ability to access and clear email from anywhere. Here are some of the other ways I use the iPhone:
- Clear email messages while doing other things, like brushing my teeth and emptying the dishwasher. I know this sounds insane, but if you get enough messages like I do that can be easily dismissed, this is a huge multi-tasking benefit.
- Research on the fly. We do a lot of driving – to visit family, take kids to sports, or take advantage of nearby attractions. I can get a lot of research done from the passenger seat. The iPhone makes it really easy to send yourself information in the form of links to whatever URL you’re looking at. And when I had multiple layovers earlier this year, I used the time to troll freelance job boards. Whenever I found a promising lead, I emailed myself the link.
- Not burning the cookies. I’m not the world’s greatest cook. If I get interested in something I’m very likely to forget whatever’s boiling on the stove. And the handy timer on the microwave does no good if you’ve taken the dog out for an impromptu walk. Now I use my iPhone timer in my pocket quite often.
- IPod. Hello! This miraculous machine has a built in iPod. Granted, I’ve only managed to synch my daughter’s iTunes account so all I listen to is the Jonas Brothers and Hannah Montana, but you can run to those in a pinch. My next trick: download free audio yoga classes from iTunes for my next trip.
- Maps. We’ve used the maps on some longer road trips and they’ve come in handy. However, I’m not sure these are all 100% accurate yet, so you might want to pack a road atlas just in case.

I am with you the iPhone is well worth the money.
I love my iPhone too! What's your favorite app other than the ones it comes with?
One of the more best things about the iPhone is the ability to accessorize. The iPhone has more cases, docks, and other gadgets than any other cell phone. You can even use the iPhone to operate your car. It's crazy how far smartphones have come even in the last year.
I've had my IPhone since a few months after they came out. I love everything about it. It's like a very portable computer. I can take pictures and send them instantly to anyone's email. I can read, answer and delete mail. Easily answer and put calls on hold. Text message, answer call and go back to text messaging. I have right now 3 full pages of apps and most were no charge to download. These are just a few things why I love my phone.
Lela, the FB for iPhone app is my absolute favorite. It's awesome. When you have that app, you are able to update your status wherever you are (if that is your thing) but more importantly, I love to post pics of my family/kids, etc. in one place on my FB profile. In doing this, my friends and family can see them instantly, make comments, etc. Uploading pix from your iPhone's camera roll to the FB app is soooooo simple. I use it all the time. Also, not entirely sure, but I think this app is free.
Lela--the apps are great! I have to be careful, though because they add up quickly. I'd be curious to find out what you think once you start downloading them.
When we were selecting mine, my husband wanted me to get a Blackberry like his or an LG View (I think because they were buy one get one free and he wanted one), but now that I have this one, he's constantly pointing out what his can't do.
I've had mine for less than a week, and I was very nervous about learning to use it, so I took it in to the corporate store and the lady there spent an hour showing me all the great features and how to use them.
I've already gotten my money's worth out of the data plan. I am ALWAYS on the internet--even hubbing! I like that I can read and send my email while waiting in line, or waiting for an appt--just about anywhere I have to hurry up to get there and end up waiting. By the time I get home, all of that is taken care of, and I find myself spending more time NOT on the computer, which makes my family VERY happy!
You wrote such a great hub about it! I enjoyed reading your comparison with the Blackberry and about your thought process in choosing it.
Lela, I feel you on the iPhone! I felt exactly the same way that you did about justifying the initial purchase. (I am also a WAHM).
Now I feel like that was a silly thought to even have in the first place! I am more serene (no such thing as being lost anymore), more well-rounded (I can listen to new music other than cartoon soundtracks), more connected (you haven't downloaded the Facebook App? Oh, mama!) and just much happier as a result. My iPhone makes me a better person. LOL!
Hi, Lela. Did I miss you in the forum thread? If so, I'm so sorry. I came across this by accident. Going to add you now.
Great hub, very detailed info; I jsut bought a phone and I'm still puzzeled by it!
