If you’re having a Halloween party for kids you’re going to need lots of spooky treats! Of all the cake ideas I found, this recipe for a Halloween ghost cake with flaming eyes is the simplest. This kids cake is also sure to be the hit of any party. While this ghost cake instructions call for a complicated, quick burning set of eyes, you can also use long burning tea lights for a similar (I think better) effect! Take this ghost cake to the neighborhood party and you’ll be a hit among ghouls!

This cake is ridiculously adorable. Kids will love it and parents will be impressed by your kitchen prowess. Don’t tell them how easy it is. Just let it be your specialty!

What You Need For the Cake:

  • Standard box white cake mix (chocolate cake, or any other, works just as well.)
  • 9 x 13 rectangular pan
  • white frosting, or whipped cream
  • toothpicks
  • M&Ms, Junior Mints, chocolate chips, or other dark, round candy

Note: It's also fine of course if you have other batter recipes. Cakes are cakes!

What You Need For the Eyes:

  • Empty egg shell
  • 2 sugar cubes
  • 1 tsp lemon extract
    OR
  • 2 tea lights

Directions:
Start by baking a white cake according to the directions on the box. Bake it in a greased 9 x 13 rectangular pan. Once cooled, carefully cut the ghost's rounded head by starting half way up the side of the cake on both sides. Take that piece you've just cut off and cut it in half. Attach each half to either side of the cake to make the arms. Secure with toothpicks. Ice the cake with whipped cream or white icing. Create mouth from the by sticking the candy into the frosting.

Directions for the eyes:
The traditional way to make this cake is to use two halves of an empty egg shell. (How you get the egg shell in half is beyond me! Place a sugar cube in each half egg shell and pour 1/2 teaspoon of lemon extract over each. Light it and it burns for a minute or two. I prefer to use tealights. They’re easy to stick into the frosting and stay lit for hours. Just don’t leave this cake, burning, unattended on the buffet table!

Optional: You might be able to find some commercial cake decorations to use for eyes. Or you could just make some out of craft paper. But they won't be flaming, and isn't that the best part?

Adorable cake. I have a suggestion for getting the egg shells in half. Poke a small hole in the middle of shell, then using small kitchen scissors, insert a blade into the hole to carefully cut egg shell in half. Small fingernail scissors would work great, but obviously would need to be cleaned first! :)
