This latest one is just gross. It seems kids have found a new way to get high by inserting vodka soaked tampons into the vagina. And just so the boys won't be left out, it works rectally as well. This is one of those awful things that no one wants to believe is possible, but read on.
If you search the Internet, you will find some dispute about whether this is a real occurrence or a rumor. Keep in mind that many vaginal medications are routinely administered via tampon, and that the unprotected membranes of the vagina and anus would allow alcohol to enter the bloodstream faster than the acid protected gastrointestinal tract. The truth is it doesn't matter how it started, kids may try it when they hear about it.
It's important to stay one step ahead of your kids when it comes to drugs and alcohol. Just look at all the forum activity I found by googling vodka soaked tampon.
Usually when a rumor starts flying, there's at least a little truth to it. So whatever you believe to be the truth, there's no excuse for not at least acknowledging this might be a possibility. Remember when no one believed kids were really having all that oral sex?
Intoxication by alcohol soaked tampon is thought to be undetectable by parents and others. Kids think it prevents the smell of alcohol on the breath, but they're wrong. Because alcohol is partially eliminated from the body through the lungs, when alcohol is in the blood, it will always be present in expired air, and therefore detectable by smell. This is how breathalyzer tests measure blood alcohol content. It has nothing to do with how the alcohol is taken in.
Another perceived benefit is that the user gets high without the stomach upset associated with drinking. While this may be true, putting ethanol into contact with the highly sensitive vaginal or rectal mucosa likely causes burning discomfort in the short term and a drying effect over the long term. This could lead to bleeding during normal functioning.
Though this may be the first you've heard of this unusual way to catch a buzz, Oxford University scientific journals first reported the practice in the 1990s. In 2002, the University of Bristol organized seminars "Alcohol, Education and Young People", including a session on the practice of young females inserting tampons soaked in alcohol. Apparently it's very popular in Europe and South America, especially Columbia.

OMG...
well, still better than the one I saw on *hamsters*....(shudder)
That would work yea but burn like hec. I use to insert medication into my rectum in emergencies when I was too sick to take pills or hold them down. Some products like aspirin really burn, tylenol and narcotics were okay. I heard of alcohol enemas a long time ago, I also heard of some people dying from alcohol positioning because of ingesting too much alcohol too fast. People dont know how much they can take because it's not the way alcohol is normally ingested. You can actually OD from alcohol!
Thats crazy. I dont know of any girl that would want to insert something that can potentially sting her to death inside of her vagina.
this is gross!
But you guys have such a American view on alcohol and teenage drinking! I mean seriously guys give your teens freedom! then need to try these things!
I'm 15 and i regually drink, my parents provide the alcohol and they know that i sometimes get drunk, but they can trust me not to do anything too crazy!
I know what you're probably thinking, 'oh she must be some working class, council housed scratter who's parents are on the dole' but I'm not, my Dads a doctor and my Mum a teacher and i go to private school!
Most of my friends are allowed to drink and our parents feel that if we are allowed alcohol from a young age they we are less likely to go mad when it's finally legal!
You have to face up to the fact that most average teens going to get drunk every now and again and make so silly choices, we're going to smoke a little bit and maybe try the odd drug, we're young and free and we want to life like there's no tomorrow!
thanks.
Wow. Kids think of everything these days. Very interesting article.
Woah! Shocking. Thanks for sharing. Though, I must say I have never heard of this, and I have only recently entered my tweentens! (I'm 21! lol). I do agree with Imagine13 though and (some) of what doctor ip said. It is good to be aware of things like this, but I honestly don't think this is very common. (at least not where I am).
Anyways interesting hub - as you can tell by the discussions! Well done.
Dang I just wrote a long comment, but wasn't finished....and it disappeared. Anyway, nice hub Lela. Thanks.
Wow! That's kind of shocking but totally makes sense. Teenagers may not know it, but chemicals placed inside vagina and most especially inside rectum which is a part of the digestive system are more quickly absorbed in the bloodstream as compared to oral ingestion that still has to go to some chemical reaction in the stomach. Of course it can be detected. Check out my hub http://hubpages.com/hub/Drug-Testing-Kits that focuses on detecting substance and drug addiction in many ways. Great job Lela! :)
On an unrelated note... sorry for all of the typos in there. ._.
I had a few comments I wanted to respond to in a sense.
It's hard to say what the best way is to raise kids. Imagine13, good for you. My parents were also somewhatliberating when it came to setting down ground rules. It didn't really force me to be independent, it just gave me the freedom to make my own choices. Among those choices was drinking when I was 19, losing my virginity when I was 21 (I'm 24 now), and a single night throughout my entire life when I tried pot and mushrooms, not really my cup of tea. I've never smoked (except the pot that one night, which was awful and painful all together.)
This, however, doesn't always work. Sure I was able to try something and then make "the right choice" about those things later on, but that didn't work for people I grew up with.
I have plenty of friends who don't make the best choices because they tried something, much like I did, but made the "wrong choice" about that thing.
Never in my life would I try this tampon thing, and I heard it first from a family friend nurse who worked at a local high school here. I'm a bio major at BSU and uhhh, really? I'm thinking really bad yeast infections. Anyone else? Also, the reaction that your body has to too much reaction, like puking, which is unfortunate but VERY useful. It's a warning sign, DUH. If you don't have that warning sign, which is usually one of the first warning signs, then you'll have a better chance of alcohol poisoning.
I'm speaking in general now, not to imagine13, so I wasn't saying DUH to her or anything. It sounds like the general opinion of commenters is disgust.
I'm no goody two shoes, I just like to think I'm smarter than this, and it's a shame to see people who aren't smart enough to realize that this is a really bad idea. XD
I always feel like we're so caught up on this goody two shoe opinion towards kids and their choices, that we forget that it's not the right thing, it's just the smart thing. It's not that we want them to be good little citizens, we don't want them to do something that may be like the equivalent of drinking battery acid. It's just plain dumb, it's poison.
Now I don't necessarily think that what my parents and imagine13's parents did was right, and I don't think that a harsher governing parental structure is right, I just think parents need to be aware. Both of what their kids are doing, and also of how the kids react to what the parents do. You can tell when you're kids are becoming annoyed with your involvement I would imagine, so back off a little. Stay involved enough to suggest things to them, but for goodness sake don't wire them up to a brainwashing machine, or they'll try and break free.
Aaand I don't know how to end that, or even where I went with it. So good bye I guess. XD
Thanks for the info. Self-destruction seems to know no limits. I try to stay up to date but this is a new one on me.
Good afternoon everyone. I'm a 16 year old male living in CA. I just have to say that. [imagine13] is totally right in every way and form. The teenage years are the toughest ever, everyone knows that, you can't deny it. If you think this tampon business is a new development, you are entirely wrong.. Its been out way before you guys caught wind of it.
Just going back to reading this 'hub' quote: "Though this may be the first you've heard of this unusual way to catch a buzz, Oxford University scientific journals first reported the practice in the 1990s."
My question: why report on it now? Madame Lela Davidson, you are an incompetent, clearly insecure, and reading many other of your 'hubs' frequently misunderstood. Let me reiterate, this is /old/ news (early 1990's old) before I was born, old. (Depending on your standpoint, considering I was born in 1994).
The sad bit here is that parents actually read this mess, and the ones that read it are just as insecure as Madame Lela Davidson here. And it was stated above also, these insecure parents are the ones that like to "be apart of their child's life", and they are typically the only ones you'll hear on the news. Lastly, I must say that these type of articles only fuel these insecure bastions of parental incompetence, and that parents shouldn't 'freak out' and immediately believe that his/her son/daughter is actually doing things this stupid and of this magnitude.
This is why teens have a hard time in their life, people always accuse teens of things they haven't done. If you want to think that your child really puts vodka soaked tampons up his/her rectal cavity, you good sir/madame need to see a mental specialist. I will admit, that some teens are stupid enough to try it, but you as the parent will know sooner or later, especially if the teen in question is a male, and you find tampon wrappers in his room.
Okay i went looking on the internet to find out more information about this and teh consequences because i dont really prefer the taste of the lame vodka i can get seeing as im only 18 and there were girls at the party i was at last night that we're doing it and we're just as drunk as me except i was choking back shots.
I usually respect both views in any situation like this whether its drugs or alcohol or anything. Your blog or whatever this is really struck a chord with me. you said "It's important to stay one step ahead of your kids when it comes to drugs and alcohol." I'll never understand where parents today got the idea that the more rules and regulations they lay down the more their children will listen. Noahsp said it exactly. Kids are going to do what they want to do. We're young, we're 'finding' ourselves. The more adults and parents fight it the harder we fight back. I do drink, i've never tried drugs, and i enjoy a cigarette after i've had a few. i grew up in a family where i was forced to be independent. i got nothing handed to me and i had no one to tell me not to do certain things. (who actually listens in health and FLE-sex ed.) I've never had the 'talk' with my mother, she's never said don't do drugs, she's never said don't drink alcohol. I'm not saying she agrees with it but she's forced me to be independent from a young age. When everyone else was with their moms at the mall i was allowed to go alone with my own credit card and i was expected to have some responsibility and know my limits. At many times i hated it and felt i never got that connection with my mom, but without the sex talk without the drugs and alcohol talk i'm still a virgin with my boyfriend of 3 years (and don't think he doesnt ask every weekend)and i've found ways to drink responsibly. Maybe you'll say underage drinking in itself isn't responsible, but it's happening and we're finding ways of doing it without you knowing. Don't doubt the lengths we'll go to to make sure you don't know what's going on. Telling your son he'll get in a car accident and have to explain a tampon in his butt to the doctors will not stop him from drinking or even trying this. Now i can't see a boy hitting on a girl and be super cool when he has a tampon in but yeah... whatever floats your boat i guess. And i don't want to assume your son (pink mingos) is a part of the masses or conforms but it's around him. and he makes choices on his own and im sorry but you're not in the back of his head when a girl is in front of him, you're the farthest thing from his thoughts in that moment. Instead of forcing it on your children to not drink and do drugs try teaching them to be independent. show them that they are strong enough to make their own decisions and that sometimes those decisions will be wrong sometimes and that's how they'll grow. stop trying to save them from making those bad decisions, they're what teach them and give them strength to make the right decisions the next time.
Being a teen today isnt easy, going from high school life to college is one of the scariest things i've ever had to do and i cried and missed my mommy for the first week. It's not fun. cut us some slack. You've kind of gotten the swing of life now, you're into it. We're still trying to get things right and then we have a million other pressures placed on us. DO NOT say "i was a teen once." You weren't a teen in these times, where we're competing against athletes that cheat with steroids, and an entire new culture or race that is coming to america (asians) and taking our spots in college. We have so much on our minds, plus we're wondering if we're going to be trying to find jobs in the next depression. we're starting life, really starting it. Trying to graduate, finding jobs, starting families and all at the same time we're trying to please YOU. A lot of us just want to make you proud, you gave us life, hell it's the least we could do for you. We might slip up sometimes but please just give us a break because we love you and we know what we owe you. just stop trying to stay a step ahead of us and try just walking with us so we're making our own decisions but when we fall we know you're there.
I know i just went off on a rant. but it's just something that makes me so mad. We're not stupid idiots just bumbling around, please give us a little credit. We're young and restless. we're trying. so give us a break.
Well, you're right ... this is a new one on me, but I dont' doubt it one bit. I just told my 17 year old about it and he hadn't heard of it either. We all know that if you try and tell most teenagers anything, they will do the opposite, so I simply said: "Can you imagine a guy doing that and then being in a car accident? How would he EXPLAIN it to the ER doctors and nurses?????"
I'm pretty sure I don't ever have to worry about him trying it now... ;)
Hey-
Im 19 and I go to Augsburg College. I've heard of people doing this kind of thing before. Although I would NEVER because it just sounds dangerous and dumb. After I read this article I told a few friends about it who responded with a stone faced ya i know about that. Its just crazy. A lot of people have the annoying kind of parents who FREAK OUT about everything. Which is sad and unfortunate. Fortunately for me my mom has always been really understanding of everything and has chosen her battles well all of my 19 years. I feel perfectly comfortable to ask her about all kinds of things and she has provided me with good advice so I can live a healthy life. What I mean is that a lot of kids do stuff and try to hide it from their parents vs asking them about it first.
I only wish I had access to information like this about 7 years ago. And that the parents of my son's friends would take their heads out of the sand and believe what their "little darlings" were/are REALLY up to. Truth is, kids will always be one step ahead of parents because parents want to believe the best, not the worst.
With kids accessing the internet (or even if your kids can't, there are kids at their school who can and do), it's frightening and appalling the things they can be exposed to. Some days I really do want to turn back the clock and give my son the reasonably naive teenhood I had. *nostalgic sigh*
I appreciate this information. My girls are still young, but this is something I will remember... I would never have thought!! The younger a person is exposed to alcohol, the higher his or her chances of becoming addicted - not a good thing. Thank you for a great hub written in a very tasteful manner :)
Noahsp, Congratulations to you on making it to college. I know there are kids who go wild once they get out from under their parents' roofs. But the activities you describe are happening at the high school, junior high school and even middle school level. We as parents really are behind the curve when it comes to the creative ways our kids find to abuse their minds and bodies -- ways that go well beyond anything we did as teens or even as adults.
Lela is just trying to open parents' eyes, not suggest that parents spy on their kids. I'd rather read about things like this here then wait and watch them in episodes of Law & Order.
Thank you, Lela. MM
Lela, you censor "inappropriate" comments, but you write an "inappropriate" article. If it is not appropriate for children, it is not appropriate for adults. I am a college student and my experiences have taught me that the children with the over protective parents who try and censor the world around them, and try to "stay a step ahead", are usually the kids who when they go to college, blow a bunch of coke, participate in dorm room gangbangs, flunk out of school, and end up blowing dick for smack, in an abandoned house, in the ghetto. Quit spying on your children and talk to them, they would be far less likely to shove vodka soaked tampons up their ass.
I just caught my daughter shoving not 1, but TWO vodka-soaked tampons (VST's). I can't believe this is happening to our family, this is terrible. Parents need to be aware of this horrible problem.
its true and is done quite easily, i do it often.
I kind of agree with uadouche. I don't think that a tampon would absorb enough vodka to get somebody that drunk.
No medicines are administered via tampons. If you don't even know simple medical terms, why would I believe this article?
Actually saw this on CSI the other night; couldn't believe it! Wow...hard to stay up on all the "creative" ways to do incredibly stupid things. Thanks for the hub!
I'm in a relationship with a woman who was a stripper until the beginning of last week. She's told me about two other strippers who are banned from drinking at the club who soak tampons in vodka. I didn't ask what they insert them in - I assume the vagina but am just guessing. I asked if the manager can't figure out they're still getting drunk and she told me he just assumes they're getting high. Apparently that's ok with him - go figure.
Zoinks! I'm glad I have boys.
I guess my only hesitancy to believe this is that if you soaked a tampon in vodka, it would expand and not be usable. I guess if you squeezed it out and reinserted it into its little tube you could do it, but how much would there be to absorb?
I don't doubt much about teens and stupid acts, though.
Lela! I think that I was a little happier before I read your article. I'm shocked to say the least.
Thanks for your informative but very disturbing HUB
regards Zsuzsy
This is interesting information. Parents can, in fact, be very present in their children's lives and stop them from doing dangerous things. Parents should, and can, be aware of what is happening in the lives of their children.
I think it is too much information for our children..and they will try whatever is news....sad..I am hooked on a feeling....I hate all the easy ways told to our children....what are we becoming in this country anyway???? We are Americans who stand for all things..we are the BREAD BASKET of the world..and we are giving this information out??? I am sorry there are limits.....It is good though that parents are informed..but as parents you can't stop what the children will try..I know I am 68 and have 3 children ...7 grandchildren and 1 great-grand-child... i have seen a lot...maybe not all..but i have Faith in what we believe in if we can teach it to our children..from birth on..goodness...truth..honesty..God...rise above the challenges we face...we are special and good people..we are the children of god... G-Ma :O)
Wow this is something I never would have thought about... It's crazy! Honestly, I'd rather drink it than stick it up me...
I do agree with bloggerdollar in the sense that the kids who practice this must have been badgered from their parents about not drinking that they needed to try something else... I mean technically it's not drinking, but you're getting the same result it seems...
But, it does seem that according to the article, maybe it is more addicting than regular drinking...
Wow something new every day thanks for the info!

Lela, once again, you blew me away!! I had NO idea about this method..and I typically pride myself on being somewhat up on what's going on in that generation of people...thanks for the heads up!!
Lela, I love that you stay current or even a head of the curve of the difficult choices that our kids will have to make. The downside of this method of consumption seems a lot worse than drinking vodka. I can't imagine this is very popular...But I've been surprised before.
hey, i am 18. i live in indiana. icannot believe this. its crazy. absolutely crazy. i have never heard of this before.its stupid actually. wow. thats all ican say.lol.
Alas where is my innocence gone?
What will happen to our children or for that matter their children?
I guess I'm not surprised, considering the number of medications that are administered rectally. Even if it is a rumor, some people will try it when they hear about it and make it real. It will likely not stop at alcohol. Some days i am surprised that humanity has not exterminated itsaelf.
You have got to be kidding!!?? GREAT Hub Lela!! As a Life Coach I am often asked to give talks to young teens about STD prevention and help them determine the meaning of sexual activity for themselves!! I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF THE ABOVE!! I fully believe you Lela!! Thanks for keeping us all posted!! Wow!! I am just shocked!! Blessings on you for enlightening us all!! Earth Angel!!

That's really gross. Genius, though, if you want the buzz and don't like the taste of alcohol!
